Once upon a dreary cold December night, my dad found that we didn't have enough money to have presents at Christmas. I, being 4 at the time, had no impression of what was really happening with our current state of affairs, as I didn't pay it much mind that we were living in a troubled trailer park to begin with. I expected Christmas to come as it had in the past, with me waiting for the parents to finish wrapping the presents under the tree at midnight so I could eat the remnants of the cookies 'Santa' left behind, but leave behind the carrots I left for the reindeer, and efficiently unwrap my presents and fall asleep in the paper. This Christmas was different. My mom looked worried and my dad seemed concerned. Surely Santa likely wouldn't be able to fit his sleigh on this rickety roof? My impressions were wrong, when I found a Christmas tree lit up aglow with a wide variety of presents here and there, with a small Hooked-On-Phonics toy and a 'Mickey's Dangerous Chase' Game Boy Cartridge (that I still have today). My parents told us that Santa had come by, and I contented myself to the glorious revelation. A few years later, after the Christmas night, I discovered that we actually got those presents from people who donated their time and money at the Salvation Army to ensure that we actually had a Christmas. If it weren't for those people who took the time to dig into their pocket change to donate a dollar or two, I probably would have awoken to an empty, lifeless tree. Ever since then our family decided to make it a ritual to ring the bells every single Christmas Eve to date (We couldn't make it to the last years ones since some people already took the time spot) and we even went shopping a few times for the Angel Tree Foundation to buy presents for others who felt the same fear that Christmas may have just been another day. So when you hear those annoying little bells around your local Wal-Mart or grocery store, just remember that there are those who have been impacted more than you could ever know by a simple act of charity. |
